Car Rallies in Cyprus
With its twisting gravel tracks and awesome countryside, Cyprus has become a top venue for car rallying in recent years. Several car rallies, including a round of the World Rally Championship (WRC), take place on the island, visitors coming from across the globe to witness the drama of this much loved motorsport.
A WRC rally event has graced Cyprus every year since 2000. All the great rally drivers of the current era have pitted their wits against the twists and turns of more than 18 stages spread out over 326kms of Cypriot countryside. Past winners include Carlos Sainz, Colin McRae, Marcus Gronholm, Petter Solberg and, in 2004, the mighty Sebastien Loeb.
All of the stages are run in the countryside to the north of Limassol and Paphos. The event normally lasts three days, and has recently been moved from a mid-summer slot on the WRC calendar to a weekend in May.
Besides the WRC rally event, Cyprus is host to a number of other car rallies throughout the year. The exhilarating Troodos Rally in the autumn is a firm favourite on the FIA Middle East Rally Championship Calendar. The rally starts in Nicosia and heads up into the Troodos Mountains.
Known as one of the most challenging courses in the championship, the best rally drivers in the world from countries like Dubai, Jordan and Qatar take on a route that is some 100kms in distance. From a spectator's point of view the Troodos Rally is certainly one of the most exciting rallies in Cyprus to watch.
Classic car rallies too are organized in Cyprus. The Cyprus Automobile Association via FIPA has run a classic car rally for the past 18 years on the island. It is a well-recognized event that sees pre-1982 cars take on the narrow twisting roads of Cyprus from Nicosia over to Paphos and back again. If you've got a classic car then all you have to do is pay a nominal fee and you too could be racing in one of the top historic car rallies on the international motorsport calendar!
