|Tennis in Cyprus
Tennis is a popular sport in Cyprus. It is estimated that there are over 10,000 tennis players in the country, 5650 of whom are registered with the Cyprus Tennis Federation - the sport's governing body on the island. Marcos Baghdatis, who is one of the most talented junior tennis players in the world, hails from Cyprus. Together with the Cyprus Davis Cup team, Marcos has done much to raise the profile of tennis in the country and Cypriot tennis on the world stage.
Cyprus offers a choice of fifty-three outdoor tennis court complexes for visitors and residents to choose from. There is at least one tennis court in every town on the island, so you can be sure that you've not got too far to travel for a game of tennis. In Nicosia there is also an indoor tennis court complex at the National Tennis Centre.
Inaugurated in 2001, the National Tennis Centre of Cyprus is a plush sports complex that incorporates four clay tennis courts, a multipurpose indoor hall, modern gymnasium and offices all under one roof. The tennis courts have the capacity to hold 2000 spectators, and since its ceremonial opening they have hosted a number of high profile tennis events on the island, including some of the thirty-seven official tennis events held in Cyprus each year.
Tennis courts are also available through some of the larger hotels on Cyprus. Guests who are resident at the hotels are normally granted access to the courts free of charge. Non-resident guests may have to pay a fee to play on the courts. Equipment hire is arranged directly with the hotel.
